Entering the arts lounge a calm, welcoming atmosphere is felt, everyone settling down into the comfortable, absorbing couches. We then direct our attention to the projection of Khanyisile Mbongwa’s video that is being projected on the wall. There is a silence in the room as the video reels you in to fully engage with the work. One is mesmerized by the intensity and consuming beauty her work brings. After the showing everyone gathers themselves in order to prepare for a Skype discussion with Mbongwa, and her work is discussed and understood. Questions are asked in order to obtain more knowledge about her work and the ways in which she works, the discussion triggered. People are mesmerized with her work. This is Lucid Lunchbox.
The Lucid Lunchbox is an informal, creative and interesting arts forum where people can discuss and debate art topics, current art affairs, performances and papers. Sikhumbuzo Makandula and Russell Bruns believe that people in Grahamstown are isolated from the art world in and out of the town; this then is an attempt to bridge the gap between the art industry and Grahamstown people, particularly Rhodes students.
The idea of this forum was conceptualized by Makandula who works in conjunction with Bruns. The two together organize a biweekly Lucid Lunchbox, where the aforementioned topics are discussed. This takes place every second Thursday at The Art Lounge 17A Somerset Street, from 13:00 – 14:00. The speakers are sourced from all over the country, many of them being renowned artist or writers in their area.
It is a wonderful opportunity to discuss and ask questions related to their work or topics in a relaxed setting, where people can bring their lunch and engage. No invitation is required and the discussion caters for interdisciplinary matters and concerns and everyone is welcome to join.
