Between the Lines

I was running late to get to the show and had run across town to try make it to Between The Lines in time. As I was running up the hill to St Andrews with my lungs burning and my legs aching, I thought, “this show better be worth my energy and time”. And boy oh boy was it. From the moment they pattered onto the stage I had goose bumps, and as they moved from dance to dance, scattered in between with song and spoken word, I fell more and more in love with the way they moved their bodies across the stage, telling a story from between the lines.

Between the Lines is a dance performance piece directed by Debbie Turner and Nathalie Vijver and performed by the Cape Academy of Performing Arts (CAPA). The raw talent that oozes out of the young individuals on stage is fantastic with the cast being multi-talented in dancing, singing and spoken word. The dancing is a mixture of contemporary ballet and interpretive dance and the cast’s ability to convey a story of not fitting in and allowing yourself to fall outside and between the lines with their bodies was marvellous. The show itself is multilingual but what you can’t understand audibly, the dancers bring it life in pirouette’s and leaps. And every now and then their synchronicity was off in group movement but hey, that would be keeping within the lines right?

At times I did feel the spoken word sometimes fell a bit short of the bar in some places, but it was made up in movement with the dance to Radiohead’s – 15 Step being my favourite, fast followed by the dance with the red rope that left me in awe on how they managed to not get tangled in amongst the rope as lines are drawn and pulled with various parts of the body. Social issues and stories are tackled and highly compelling piece is created in this performance.

Unfortunately they have no more shows scheduled for the rest of Fest but if you are ever in Cape Town, do yourself a favour and go watch a performance by these talented performers.
