This year’s Standard Bank Young Artist 2014 award winners, Husain and Hasan Essop took time out of their busy schedules to discuss the intricacies of their current works displayed in the monument gallery this festival.

The twin brothers say that it is a dream come true to have won the award so early in their careers. The brothers grew up in the southern suburbs in Cape Town and their works deal mostly with cultural, socio-economic and religious issues with which they both have firsthand experience.

“Unrest,” the title of their current exhibition, encompasses both the physical violence and turmoil experienced in an everyday South African context, as well as commenting on the unrest prevalent within the Muslim faith on local and international sphere.
